Overview
A hate crime may be defined as ‘any criminal offence which is perceived by the victim or any other person, to be motivated by hostility or prejudice based on a person’s race or perceived race; religion or perceived religion; sexual orientation or perceived sexual orientation; disability or perceived disability and any crime motivated by hostility or prejudice against a person who is transgender or perceived to be transgender.’
According to Home Office statistics in year ending March 2023, there were 145,214 hate crimes recorded by the police in England and Wales (excluding Devon and Cornwall Police). This represented a 5% decrease compared with the previous year and the first decrease in recorded hate crimes in England and Wales since 2012.
There are likely to be contextual factors which may have a material effect on police recording, however, it is clear that there is still a significant problem within the UK.
