This year the theme for National Inclusion Week 2023, which runs from 25th September – 1st October, is Take Action make an Impact1.
The spotlight on inclusion provides organisations with the opportunity to reflect and promote what they are doing to help recruit, retain and make the most of the abilities of disabled workers and those with long-term health conditions. The Health and Safety Executive2 provide information and guidance on how you can provide more inclusive practices.
In any workplace it is important to raise awareness and promote inclusive practices to your staff. Using champions and role models it is possible to help staff understand what internal and external support is available to enable them to be more inclusive in their work. Sometimes the situation may be complex and they need to know who can provide them with competent advice, for example Access to Work3 can help a worker get or stay in work if they have a physical or mental health condition or disability.
Every employer needs to consider the work barriers that may be impacting on their workers with disability or long-term health conditions. Removing or overcoming those barriers is a benefit not only for you, but the worker as well. An essential element is considering what adjustments you can make which may be physical, organisational, attitudinal or social to remove those barriers.
In the event of sickness absence, agreeing a realistic return to work plan and utilising occupational health support is also valuable. As with any occupational health and safety issue, reviewing the assessment of risk is a key requirement as part of deciding on how you can enable a phased return to work.
Those organisations that choose to ignore inclusion often find themselves falling foul of key legislation like the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974; the Equality Act 2010, and the Employment Rights Act 1996.
So to avoid those outcomes, consider what action to make an impact your organisation can take. Use the National Inclusion Week 2023 as your opportunity to support disabled workers and workers with long-term health conditions in work. That way everyone is a winner.
