Silver surfers more likely to take on floods
According to a recent survey carried out by the Environment Agency and the AA, nearly half of drivers aged 65 and over would be willing to drive through a flood, putting themselves and their vehicle at risk, rather than turn around and find a different route.
The information was published to remind drivers that driving through waterlogged roads is often more dangerous than it looks, as cars can float in water as shallow as 30cm and engines can easily be damaged by even small amounts of water.
The AA reported that it has been called out to nearly 23,000 flood rescues in the last five years. The Environment Agency is urging drivers to use its online flood warnings summary to avoid getting stuck in waterlogged areas when they are out on the road.
